A tooth extraction may be needed in the case of:
We will suggest extraction only after a careful and thorough examination of your oral health. We may take an X-ray of the tooth to understand its position and the state of the bone surrounding it. Extractions are generally performed under the effect of a local anesthetic. We may use sedation (oral or laughing gas sedation) as well.
The tooth will be removed from its socket using dental forceps and an elevator tool. Sometimes, we may have to break the tooth into pieces and extract each part individually. Once the tooth has been removed, the area is cleaned, and stitches may be placed to allow the site to heal. A gauze pad is placed over the area to control bleeding.
It is extremely vital to keep the extraction site clean in order to avoid infection. One should not smoke, brush near the extraction site, or drink with a straw for at least 24 hours following the procedure. Any swelling can be minimized by using an ice pack. In case you feel prolonged discomfort, fever or bleeding, please contact our office immediately.
